Since the birth of the world’s first ‘test tube baby’ in 1978, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has helped millions of people worldwide overcome fertility issues and become parents. But while the procedure is designed to deliver a bundle – or bundles – of joy into the world, it’s not without some downsides.
Developed by Gameto, a biotech company, that is dedicated to advancing women’s reproductive health, providing an alternative technique to traditional IVF, known as #Fertilo. It is a fertility method that uses stem cells to mature human eggs outside the body. The technique uses ovarian support cells (OSCs) derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to mimic the natural egg maturation process outside the body.
Fertilo provides an alternative to traditional IVF and, has fewer drawbacks. IVF needs a long treatment cycles, significant side effects, and the emotional and physical strain. Fertilo provides a potentially faster, safer, and more accessible solution for families. Unlike traditional IVF, Fertilo avoids 80% of the hormone injections and reduces the treatment cycle duration to just 3 days, making it faster, safer, and less invasive.
Fertilo has already gained regulatory approval in several countries, including Australia, Japan, and Mexico, with plans for Phase 3 trials in the US. The first baby conceived using this revolutionary fertility method was born at the Santa Isabel Clinic in Lima, Peru on 16 December 2024.
